About us

Vanitas Candle is a Chicago-based studio crafting hand-sculpted candles from 100% pure beeswax. The name draws from an old tradition in art history — vanitas still life, a genre of painting that celebrated the beauty of natural objects like fruit, flowers, and candles while quietly reminding the viewer that nothing lasts forever. That tension between beauty and impermanence is at the heart of everything we make.

Each candle begins as raw, unbleached beeswax, carefully shaped by hand in our Chicago studio to capture the organic textures and details of botanical forms — the layered folds of a cabbage, the reaching fingers of a citrus, the smooth weight of a kumquat. We chose beeswax as our sole material because nothing else comes close to its quality. It burns longer and cleaner than paraffin or soy, produces virtually no soot, and carries a warm, honey-sweet fragrance that comes entirely from the wax itself. No dyes, no synthetic additives, no artificial scent. What you see and smell is the material in its purest form.

We've always believed that a candle can be more than something you light. It can anchor a table, start a conversation, or sit untouched on a shelf for months simply because someone couldn't bring themselves to burn it. And when they finally do, the experience — the glow, the scent, the slow transformation — is just as beautiful as the object that held it. Every piece is hand-poured in Chicago, inspired by the natural world, and made to be beautiful even as it disappears.
